Luqman the wise

Someone told to Lukman the wise, who was ugly , with black skin , short stature , cracked lips and legs, you are so ugly ! He answered, by saying are you criticizing the creation or the Creator? God gave him wisdom, inspired him thanksgiving, and the beautiful behavior and good advice, instead of the physical beauty.

His name and lineage: he is Luqman, son of Baaoura son of Nahor son of Tareh, the father of Abraham, peace be upon him. Others said that he is son of Ankaa son of Serwan, called Tharan son. Some authors claimed that he was the nephew of the Prophet Ayoub, or son of his aunt, but it was confused with the fact that he was a black Nubian, from Egypt Ethiopians.

His life: he was, in the beginning a slave owned by one of the masters, he has worked as a carpenter, and tailor and a pastor, and has probably contributed to relevant solution for intractable problems, when solicited for that, by his master, who appropriated that very well. One day, his master was facing a very difficult situation, then Luqman saved him, by his wisdom, then the master decided to free him as reward for that, and Luqman became free man, then he has married and has sons and daughters.

His people: the word Luqmanis is derivative from eating quickly and widely, corresponding to swallowing, in Hebrew, one of the common names among the ancient Arabs, and Luqman was one of those known by that. He is son of Aad, the oldest. Some narrators said that Luqman was an Arab, but the majority of the chronologists said he was from Egypt Ethiopians, and his name was common in Semitic languages, including ancient Abyssinian.
His Era: There is no credible sources indicating his birth date, or determining his age, but chronologists said that he lived about a thousand years, whose major party is in the period of the Prophet and King David, peace be upon him, where he was inspired from his knowledge and his wisdom. Luqman remained vivid and observing the wisdom and asceticism, until the days of the Prophet Yunus, son of Metta (Dhu Nun), peace be upon him.

His characteristics a and His behaviors: Luqman was ugly, with black skin, short stature, snub nose, thick lips, cracked feet, but he was one of the good and righteous men of God. He has much contemplation, and was thinking well, he was always silent, sincere, worshipers, obedient to God, loving God until the  angels have spoken to him, and God loved him, and given him the wisdom, where he uttered only with, and God inspired him thanks, and gave him a good reputation. Some argue that he was a prophets, but the majority said that he was  a righteous man, not a prophet.
The man who spoken to angels: angels offered to Luqman, on order of Allah,to be successor who govern the people, but he replied : « if my Lord forced me I will accepted , I know that if I do, He will help me and protect me from error, but If He gives me choice, I prefer wellness, I do not ask the temptation, because the ruler is usually surrounded by injustice from everywhere, God thwart him or aid him, if he follows the right, he will be save, but if he follows mistake he loses the way of Paradise, however, to be the lower and humiliated in this life is better than to be honored with error, because preferring this lower life to the Hereafter lead to lose life, without having part in the Hereafter».

His wisdom: God cited Luqman in the Koran, and praised him, talking about the wisdom that God given to him and his thankfulness and recognition for privileges given to him.The Holy Koran immortalized him for eternity, through the Surah in his name called  Surah of Luqman, which exposed some of the wonderful wisdom that God inspired to him, and that he inspired his son and through  commandment and good preaching, in which Luqman gave a summary of qualities and high-end values in nine general sermons, which are:

  1. because that essence of wisdom is to fear of God , the first sermons of Luqman to his son was to avoid polytheism { O my son avoid to consider partner with God }.This  is an order to purify faith and monotheism, which is the greatest quality of wisdom inspired to Luqman , and the most important order  and the first duty, because God never forgives for those who died while having polytheist faith, which  is also the great injustice, because polytheist makes similar to God , despite fact that God has created him and given life, for that God has interdicted Paradise to all polytheist, and condemned all them to fire forever.
  1. Second Sermon kindness to parents , and thanks to them, after God, as a part of their right for everyone, while the right of mother is more consistent, because of her suffering from pregnancy, childbirth and from breast-feeding and breeding. The right of parents is not only to obey to their, except if they order the polytheism or disobedience to God, then such order must be banished, but kindness with them includes taking care of them in their life, especially in their weakness, at end of life, even after their death, by invocating God for their mercy. They still have right of good friendship during their life, even they ordered polytheism or disobedience to God, but without right to follow them in that.
  2. The third Sermon: the necessity to have in mind the almighty knowledge , and capability and ability of God, to take that as a barrier from sins, great and small, in secret or publically. God will bring to everyone all injustice or a sin, that he has committed anywhere on Day of judgment, when He puts the straight scales, and Will reward for that, good reward for goodness, and evil for evil {.. there will no injustice in anything, against anyone} even if there is seed fortified and veiled inside a deaf rock, or lost across the sky, God who knows every hidden thing , and anything cannot escape Him, will bring that,whatever it is so small or diminished.
  3. Fourth Sermon: about the order to perform prayer { My son, perform the prayer }. It is the main sermon, and the great wisdom, because if , prayer was held in its regular timing, with all its pillars, and conditions, the column of religion will be straight, and Muslims affairs follow the right way, and their relationship with God will be renewed, then  tranquility and peace of mind will replaced the anxiety and misery. Prayer is as a full and fresh river in front of the door of the believer in which he swims five times a day, to clean him from all his sins.
  4. fifth sermon: to remember the duty of calling for Virtue and Preventing Vice, { and enjoining what is good and prevent the evil } It is, after faith in God –to achieve the virtue condition in human society. That also constitutes a main tool of integrity and to save the ship of life  from drowning, for a society surrounded by a seas of vices and sins.This duty cannot abandoned, but is depending on the power of person, from denial by heart, to denouncing explicitly, to the obligation of doing or stop doing.
  5. sixth wisdom, in the sermon that Luqman inspired to his son, is to incite him to patience { and endure what has arrived to you }.The experience in life taught Luqman, that harm of people arrived, inevitably, to anyone enjoining what is good , or preventing Vice, and then, he ordered patience to his son for harm that arrives to him in performing the duty of calling to goodness and to prevent vice, highlighting that the patience to person’s harm is classed as great and valuable things.
  6. Seventh Sermon:  concerning the morality and behavior, Luqman forbade formally for his son, arrogance, and pride {And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful}. Turn your cheek toward people means turn your face from them while speaking to them, by arrogance and disrespect for them , and the walk-in ground merrier means vanity,  and showing off , and pride as blessed by God , and self- admiration.
  7. Eighth wisdom: to call for more humility, in any case, even in walking in the streets {be normal while walking}, that means to be modest in your walk, not be as arrogant, who walks with vanity, but not also like the weak or the sick.
  8. The ninth and final, the order to reduce voice {reduce your voice}, that prevent to exaggerate in the speech, or to raise the voice with no benefit or necessity, and overtaking standards,  there is no virtue in all this , otherwise the donkeys will have more  virtues than humans, because they have the loudest voice.

That is the wisdom and the commandments of Luqman, in his sermon to his son, as cited by the Koran in the Sura which carries his name (Surate of Luqman). Authors and historians cited many wisdom attributed to Luqman from the Jewish and Christians sources and  heritage or from some of non-confirmed resources in the Islamic era. We conclude by giving some of such wisdom:

  • If people are proud of their good talking, be proud of your good silence.
  • Three cannot be known, except through three situations: the brave in war, and generous at the need, and the mild when angry.
  • Not make a lot of apologies, the lie often goes with excuses.
  • Beware of the respectable if you humiliate him and the varmint if you give him and the indelicate if you amuse with him  and sordid if you live with him.
  • Be away from your enemy, and beware of your friend, and not involve yourself in what does not concern you.
  • Tell the good word, and smile to others, then, people will like you more than they like who gives them all things. Nothing is Best as the tongue, if it is good, and also nothing is worst than it, if it is malignant.
  • Who gives mercy will have it  , and who still silent  still save, and who tell good wins, and who tell falsehood has sin, and who cannot control his tongue  will regret, and who has good behaviors with people will enjoy that.
  • Some speech is more hard than the stone, and more permeable than  pricking by needles, and more bitter than  patience, and more heater than fire, but the hearts are as farms, then  plant in the kind word, if that don’t gives the whole result, it will give it partially.
  • If you are in prayer, keep your heart controlled, and if you are eating, keep your throat saved, and if you’re in the house of other, keep your vision controlled, and if you are among the people, keep your tongue controlled.
  • Do not waste your money while conserving someone else money, your real money is what you have given in goodness ​​, and other’s money is what you leave.
  • No wealth as best as the health , and no blessing as same as the good self.
  • Do not send an ignorant messenger, if you do not find a wise, be the messenger for yourself.
  • Give thanking to those who give you , and give those who give thanking to  you, blessing do not stay with unthankful and not disappears if thanked.
